Le corpus des deux cents Cantates sacrées de Bach est d’une inépuisable richesse. Leurs nombreuses arias abordent tous les registres affectifs avec autant de conviction, de la joie à la plus profonde douleur. Elles peuvent être accompagnées par la simple basse continue, par tout l’orchestre ou, souvent, par un ou deux instruments solistes qui concertent avec la voix. Selon une symbolique courante à l’époque, mais assez souple, le ténor, quand il ne personnifie pas l’Évangéliste dans les Passions, prête sa voix au pécheur, tour à tour accablé par ses fautes et habité par l’espérance. En témoignent les arias au programme : « Aie pitié de moi! », « Le sang qui efface ma faute », « Je me fie à sa grâce » ou « Je veux songer au ciel »…
